In her abstract series, 'Disorder Sensing', Lean Lui folded light-sensitive paper into a pinhole camera and exposed each print by throwing it at a wall, or tossing it in a washing machine. The process echoes Lui’s interests in the Taoist philosophy of Tao Te Ching, which says, “everything bears Yin and embraces Yang, and rushes into harmony.”

EnquireLui first picked up a camera when she was six years old and credits her interest in photography to an early fascination with the chemical process. As she grew into her practice, Lui developed a passion for the Surrealists and ‘wabi-sabi’, the Japanese aesthetic of transience and imperfection.
Alongside her fashion photography, Lui continues to explore alternative processes. In her series ‘Disorder Sensing’, Lean Lui folded light-sensitive paper into a pinhole camera and exposed each print by repeatedly throwing it at the wall, or tossing it in a washing machine. The process echoes Lui’s interests in the Taoist philosophy of Tao Te Ching, which says, “everything bears Yin and embraces Yang, and rushes into harmony.” After experiencing darkness and light, the print offers an abstract beauty created by the balance of Yin and Yang.
Lui’s work has been exhibited in the 2018 Beijing Three-shadow photography Award Exhibition, Hong Kong International Photo Festival, and at numerous galleries around the world.
