SOL LDN are excited to be partnering with legendary New York gallery, Howard Greenberg Gallery, to share with you an incredible online exhibition highlighting eleven pioneering female street photographers. This exhibition celebrates the American women who have made significant contributions to the field of street photography throughout the twentieth century. The exhibition explores the democratic nature of the genre, highlighting the street as a limitless creative space for female artists working within a male-dominant medium. The exhibition includes work by Berenice Abbott, Jodi Bieber, Esther Bubley, Rebecca Lepkoff, Helen Levitt, Vivian Maier, Mary Ellen Mark, Frances McLaughlin-Gill, Lisette Model, Barbara Morgan, and Ruth Orkin.

Spanning seven decades, the exhibition begins with Abbott’s documentation of New York City in the 1930s and ends with images from Jodi Bieber’s ten-year project (1994 – 2004) that focused on South African youth living on the fringes of society. Many of these photographers were members of The Photo League, a New York cooperative founded in 1936 that banded together around a range of social and creative causes. The League included a significant number of women who held leadership positions and were encouraged equally alongside their male counterparts. Working with a shared sense of humility and compassion, the photographers created a permanent record of the world as they saw it. ‘Pioneers’ offers a unique opportunity to explore the work of these eleven remarkable photographers and to appreciate the important role they played in the development of street photography as an art form.
