Artwork In Detail
Alessandra Sanguinetti’s long-term project, ‘Some Say Ice’ (2022), began with her childhood discovery of Michael Lesy’s cult classic, ‘Wisconsin Death Trip’ (1973), a nonfiction book that combined everyday photographs with disturbing news stories from Black River Falls in Wisconsin. Decades later, she returned to the same town to create a series that conjures a haunting, timeless America—portraits and landscapes stripped of modern markers yet charged with ritual, mood, and gothic intensity. The title, borrowed from Robert Frost’s poem ‘Fire and Ice’—“Some say the world will end in fire, Some say in ice”—illustrates Sanguinetti’s meditations on mortality and fragility. Presented in collaboration with Magnum Photos.

EnquireAlessandra Sanguinetti is an Argentinian-American photographer and Magnum Photos member known for her long-term, narrative projects. She has received many prestigious honours, including a Guggenheim Fellowship, the Hasselblad Foundation Grant, and also the Rencontres d’Arles Discovery Award. Her work appears in the permanent collections of MoMA (New York), SFMOMA (San Francisco), the Museum of Fine Arts (Boston and Houston), and the International Centre of Photography (New York).
