EnquireDennis Stock (1928–2010) left home at 17 to join the U.S. Navy, then apprenticed with LIFE photographer Gjon Mili, winning first prize in LIFE’s Young Photographers contest. He joined Magnum Photos in 1951 and became a full member in 1954. Stock earned international recognition for his iconic photography, capturing Hollywood stars, jazz legends, and the cultural spirit of America. Over his career, he produced a book or exhibition almost every year, taught workshops worldwide, and worked in television and film, including co-founding the production company Visual Objectives. Major museums such as the Museum of Modern Art (New York), the J. Paul Getty Museum (Los Angeles), the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Victoria and Albert Museum (London), and the Centre Pompidou (Paris) hold his work, reflecting his lasting influence on 20th-century photography.
