Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Eve Arnold has become one of the most celebrated photo-journalists of the twentieth century. In 1951, emboldened by her newfound passion, Arnold approached Magnum Photos and was contracted as their first female photographer. Choosing women’s issues as her subject matter, she travelled the world for Magnum taking picture essays in Europe, the Soviet Union, Afghanistan, Egypt and China.

Despite her prodigious talent for social-realist documentary photography, Arnold has become best known for her photographs of Marilyn Monroe, with whom she enjoyed a trusted relationship. Taken over a decade, Arnold’s studies of Monroe reached an apotheosis with a seminal series of images from the set of her 1961 film, ‘The Misfits’.
