Leonard Freed used his camera to confront themes of race, violence, and social injustice, photographing periods such as the U.S. civil rights movement and the Yom Kippur War.

EnquireLeonard Freed, born in Brooklyn to Jewish immigrant parents, first studied painting but turned to photography in 1953. After training with Alexei Brodovitch, he moved to Amsterdam, where he documented Jewish life and postwar Germany. Freed joined Magnum Photos in 1972. Edward Steichen recognised Freed’s talent early on, acquiring his work for MoMA, which then lead Cornell Capa to feature him in the landmark exhibition, ‘The Concerned Photographer’ (1967). Today, leading institutions worldwide collect and exhibit Freed’s photographs—from MoMA and the MET in New York, to the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam.
