Born in Lyons in 1923, Marc Riboud joined the French Resistance during World War II before becoming a freelance photographer in Paris. He joined Magnum Photos in 1953 and became a full member in 1955. His photographs appeared in LIFE, National Geographic, Paris-Match, and Stern, earning him multiple awards, including the Overseas Press Club Award, which he won twice (1966 and 1970). His work has been exhibited in major retrospectives, including the Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris (1985), and the International Centre of Photography in New York (1988 and 1997). Numerous institutions collect his work, including MoMA (New York), the Central Academy of Fine Arts Museum (Beijing), and Moderna Museet (Stockholm). He died in Paris in 2016 at age 93.
