Çimen earned an undergraduate degree in International Trade and Finance and a Master’s in Cultural Studies from Istanbul Bilgi University; her thesis on subaltern studies, including the photo story ‘Turkey as a Simulated Country’, was published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing in 2019. Her acclaimed series ‘Hafiz’ (2021) offers a personal look at girls in Qur’an schools across Turkey, drawing on her own experiences. Çimen has won major awards including the W. Eugene Smith Grant (2020), World Press Photo 2nd Prize, Long-Term Projects (2020), the Paris Photo–Aperture First Photobook Award (2022), and a Guggenheim Fellowship (2025). Her work has been exhibited at Kunsthal Rotterdam and Visa pour l’Image (Perpignan), and is held in collections including the Haas Family Arts Library at Yale University (New Haven, Connecticut).
