Artist Biography
Werner Bischof
Switzerland
B. 1916 – 1954
EnquireBischof studied photography under Hans Finsler in Zurich, before opening his own studio. He gained international recognition with his 1945 reportage on post-war devastation, and in 1949 became the first photographer to join Magnum Photos beyond its founders. He went on to document famine in India, post-war recovery in Europe, and life across Asia and the Americas, while publishing acclaimed essays in Du, LIFE, Picture Post, and The Observer. His books, including ‘Amerika’ (1953), cemented his reputation, and his photographs entered major collections such as MoMA (New York), the Getty Museum (Los Angeles), the Fotomuseum Winterthur (Switzerland), and the George Eastman Museum (Rochester). Tragically, Bischof’s career ended abruptly in 1954, when he died on assignment in a road accident in Peru.
