Framing
Werner Bischof: Courtyard Of The Meiji Shrine. We recommend book-mounting this print in a wide passe-partout and then framing it in a walnut wooden box. This classic method not only gives visual priority to the image but also fits seamlessly into most interiors. However, if you prefer a different look, other framing options are also available. Additionally, to ensure the highest levels of production, all of our frames are handcrafted to museum standards by one of the UK’s leading workshops. Please note that prices include tax, but exclude framing and shipping costs.
Shipping
We aim to ship unframed works within 2 weeks and framed works within 6 weeks. All orders are shipped from the UK and we always strive to deliver your print as quickly as possible. However, the delivery times may vary, depending on the specific artwork and your location. For exact details, please get in touch. Please note that prices include tax, but exclude framing and shipping costs.
Artwork In Detail
In 1951, LIFE magazine sent Werner Bischof to cover the Korean War, a journey that took him through Japan. Enchanted by the country’s beauty, design, and ritual, Bischof remained in Japan for nearly a year. During this time, one of his most striking images is a snow-covered courtyard at the Meiji Shrine, which photographer Martin Parr described as “one of those images that enters our subconscious and just stays there.” Presented in collaboration with Magnum Photos.

B. 1916 - 1954
EnquireWerner Bischof studied photography under Hans Finsler in Zurich, before opening his own studio. He gained international recognition with his 1945 reportage on post-war devastation, and in 1949 became the first photographer to join Magnum Photos beyond its founders. He went on to document famine in India, post-war recovery in Europe, and life across Asia and the Americas, while publishing acclaimed essays in Du, LIFE, Picture Post, and The Observer. His books, including ‘Amerika’ (1953), cemented his reputation, and his photographs entered major collections such as MoMA (New York), the Getty Museum (Los Angeles), the Fotomuseum Winterthur (Switzerland), and the George Eastman Museum (Rochester). Tragically, Bischof’s career ended abruptly in 1954, when he died on assignment in a road accident in Peru.
