Is AI a Threat to Photography?: Boris Eldagsen’s Sony Award Stunt

Earlier this week the news broke that German artist Boris Eldagsen refused his Sony World Photography Award. The reason for his refusal was that his prize-winning photograph was AI-generated. The artist entered the photograph into the competition as a stunt, with the intention of provoking debate around AI’s role in modern photography. The Guardian released two articles this week that consider whether AI technology is a threat to creativity, whether its becoming increasingly difficult to distinguish between AI images and photography, and what this stunt means for the industry. Eldagsen asks, “Is the umbrella of photography large enough to invite AI images to enter – or would this be a mistake?”
