Celebrated as one of the world’s most prominent landscape photographers, Michael Kenna is known for his poetic black-and-white images of locations around the globe. ‘Michael Kenna: New Works From Japan’ is the first UK exhibition dedicated to Kenna’s photographs of Japan. The display will feature a set of new images that were hand-printed in silver gelatin earlier this year. Kenna has photographed extensively in Japan since his first visit in 1987, and it is these vistas that have come to define his vision of elegant minimalism. Including beautiful scenes from Hokkaido, Honshu and Shikoku, many of the works feature the sculptural trees and snow capped hills that have become synonymous with Kenna’s Japanese landscapes.

The ArtistKenna prefers to photograph on his own, in silence, creating a sense of calm, solitude and tranquillity in his photographs. As he stated, “I prefer suggestion over description. The world is pretty chaotic, seemingly always speeding up and getting louder and more visually dense. I am interested in finding and/or creating calm shelters from the storm, places where quiet and solitude is encouraged and inner contemplation possible.”
