Captured between 1980-2022, ‘The Floating City’ displays four decades of Michael Kenna’s photographs that relay the artist’s poetic vision of Venice. Through his lens, the romantic spirit of the city emerges between buildings veiled in mist, glowing street lamps, ornate bridges silhouetted against the sheen of winding canals and tall wooden pilings rising from the calm lagoon. Kenna is widely celebrated for his signature use of long exposure, with some works made over several hours. By incorporating striking elements of blurred motion alongside a haunting stillness and serenity, Kenna invites the viewer to reflect on the passage of time, a theme that extends across much of his work. His atmospheric use of light, shadow and reflection elevates these street scenes to an ethereal vision of beauty, tapping into the alluring tale of an enchanted city, miraculously suspended on water. The exhibition coincides with the publication of Kenna’s new book, ‘Venice: Memories and Traces’, published earlier this year by SKIRA.
