Kourtney Roy Wins the Prix des Libraires Photobook of the Year (2023)
We are delighted that Kourtney Roy’s new book The Other End of the Rainbow has won France PhotoBook’s Prix des Libraires Photobook of the Year (2023). Published last year by Editions André Frère (in both French and English), the book is quickly gaining recognition within the field. Earlier this year, the book was nominated for the Arles Book Award at the prestigious photography festival, Rencontres d’Arles.
For this project, Roy spent more than two years traveling along Highway 16 in British Columbia, where for years women and girls, mainly of indigenous origin, have been disappearing or found dead. In the course of this journey, Roy met many of the victims’ families and loved ones, whose testimonies feature prominently in the book.
As a Canadian artist who normally specialises in the creation of fictional worlds, I felt it was important to focus on a present-day situation; an often-ignored national tragedy with deep roots in colonialisation, racism and misogyny.
